I am making time work.

Updated: Jul 20

Is it the 10th already? It's baffling how we allow time to control us, feeling like it's tightening a noose around our necks.

We often find ourselves overwhelmed by impending deadlines, letting them dictate our actions. It's crucial that we take charge of our day and plan what we want to achieve. Whether it's through making a to-do list or finding a method that works for us, we must take the reins. This is a reminder to myself as well. We're familiar with this concept, ingrained in us from school, work, and our social circles. But do we genuinely embrace it?

I often catch myself going with the flow, lacking a concrete plan for my goal. Before I know it, I'm engrossed in a morning show or my favorite program, only to realize that the day is slipping away. This approach leads to rapid burnout; we lose control of the day, work piles up, and catching up becomes overwhelming. Consequently, we criticize ourselves, feeling lazy and worthless, perpetuating a cycle that leads to burnout.

By planning our day, we can schedule a rejuvenating walk at 5:30 AM, have breakfast at 6:15 AM, take an hour to unwind after the kids are at school, and then tackle our list of tasks. This way, we're taking an active approach and making time work for us instead of the other way around.

However, the real challenge lies in executing this plan. Unexpected events such as a malfunctioning washing machine or a family member requiring a trip to the emergency room can easily throw everything off course.

Similar principles apply to our workdays, though we may have fewer opportunities for relaxation or breaks. While we might be unable to slot in a leisurely hour to unwind during the day, we can still follow a planned schedule and modify it as needed.

Planning our time after work is equally vital, especially for those in committed relationships. After a long day, taking some time to unwind is essential. Dinner plans can be unpredictable, whether it's cooking at home or grabbing a quick meal like fast food. Scheduling regular home-cooked dinners a few times a week can bring some structure to the routine.

Following a schedule can provide comfort and reassurance that we're purposefully living our lives. Even if we only sometimes stick to it rigidly, having a plan means taking control of our time and making the most of it. This approach also helps silence the inner voice that can make us feel worthless and lazy by replacing it with positive feelings about ourselves.

Ultimately, success in life isn't about comparing ourselves to others who seem to leave their lives to chance and appear more successful. It's about the importance of planning for crucial aspects of life such as family, marriage, caregiving, community involvement, health, and work-a-day issues. This allows us to have a fulfilling life.
